About The Ladybug Gift Shop

The Ladybug Gift Shop opened the Fredericksburg store in January 2004, in the historical section of Fredericksburg, Virginia. The shop is the creation of Ann Adkins, who wanted to offer something new and different for the local shoppers and tourists visiting Fredericksburg. Today, The Ladybug Gift Shop offers a variety of beautiful and functional gift items some imported from such places as Poland, Russia, Italy and Africa. The shop also features limited edition prints and original artwork and pottery from local and regional artists. Ann continues to add new and unique items to the inventory offering her customers a unique and varied selection for personal use as well as gifts for family and friends.

Since opening the shop in Downtown Fredericksburg, Ann has had many requests from tourists visiting the area and from local customers for a website that will allow them access by internet. In response to a growing volume of customers around the country, Ann is pleased to offer this online shop. We hope you enjoy your shopping experience whether in person at the local Fredericksburg shop or by using the new online store.

A bit of history

Located at 614 Caroline Street, in Fredericksburg, Virginia, The Ladybug Gift Shop is conveniently located in the historical Old Town section of the City, just a block south of the Visitor's Center. The shop is located in one of Fredericksbug's historical buildings on the 600 Block of Caroline Street once designated as the Shops of Jones' Row.

During the 18th century the 600 Block of Caroline Street was the southern end of the City of Fredericksburg. In 1743, Augustine Washington, a Virginia Planter willed a portion of the block to his son, George Washington. However, by 1753, George, who was already engaged in other pursuits, sold the property to a group of merchants from Glasgow, Scotland. True to their tradition these industrious Scots erected a store and residences. Tobacco, which was to be the mainstay of Fredericksburg's economy for most of a century, created the need for warehouses. This in turn brought about the construction of wharves for shipping, new merchants with additional goods for the growing population, and an increase in the ever present number of taverns. The 600 Block of Caroline Street teemed with this activity.

Over time, Fredericksburg changed and these properties have changed hands many times over the years. Typically with a change in ownership came a new use of the buildings. These changes and the creative uses are a part of the unique history of the City. As the City grew in size these properties became a part of what is today the Central Business District. Today, they are a part of a registered National Historic District and a newly revitalized area. Closely associated with the past, they offer an opportunity for tourists and local residents to experience the heritage and historical aspect of Fredericksburg. We look forward to seeing you at The Ladybug Gift Shop as you experience the history and charm of Old Town Fredericksburg.
